2022 Fall Runway Fashion & Beauty Trend _ Inspiration#1 Pink Spirits

< Searching for extreme color palette >

In this column, we will look into the fashion styles and backstage makeup of entire collections and introduce the most eye-catching trends. In fashion, extreme colors were used here and there in the collection to capture our attention. Unlike the bright hues from the S/S collection, the palette consisted of deep and highly saturated colors. Different colors like fuchsia pink, fluorescent blue, mustard yellow, and Very Peri were applied. Although we saw wearable clothes in black, gray, and beige throughout the collection, extreme colors popped up as elements that stimulated the viewers.

A Y2K aesthetic continued with accessories, clothes, and make-up all designed in matching colors. The Valentino collection, the most prominent collection in the F/W season in Paris, left a deep impression, with everything from all outfits and stage designs in the color of fuchsia pink.

Over 40 fuchsia pink looks, instead of being punky and girlish, consisted of more ladylike and formal outfits like ready-to-wear jackets and coats in various silhouettes. Men’s clothes were also included in the mix, highlighting the gender neutrality of the collection. The pink color used from head to toe was also used as a highlighting element in the makeup of some models, but most of the models wore pink makeup that made them look as if they were wearing a thin and light veil of pink that spreads gently throughout their eyes, checks and lips.

Apart from the Valentino collection, the wave of vivid colors appeared in various forms in other fashion weeks held in other cities. Among these, there was a small flow of extreme pink look, applied in just three to four looks from the entire collection pieces, while the 2022 pantone color of the year, Very Peri, appeared as a highlighting color in numerous collections. From the interviews with designers, we could feel the overall direction of the design, which was aimed at delighting the eyes of customers and conveying positive energy amid the pandemic.

The Versace collection showed a glamorous catwalk look layering oversized coats in shocking pink on top of their signature items, corset tops and pin stripe suites. Michael Kors and Genny collections coordinated all items worn by each single model in the same hue, showcasing various colors including pink, coral, yellow, and cool tones.

Similar to the extreme pink we saw in the runway fashion, backstage makeup was also dominated by various pink tones. Centered around the Paris collection, neutral pink tone-on-tone makeup found in multiple back stages was applied in transparent, natural styles even for the F/W season. Pink was also added to the taupe (gray and brown) shades used widely in runway makeup looks more prominently compared to the previous season.

Other extreme colors besides pink were also used on the eyes and other areas. Highly saturated hues like blue and yellow were used to match the outfit or as accent colors in the collection.

1

Barely Pink

Valentino, Paris

Flying Solo, Paris

Paco Rabanne, Paris

Pink makeup can be used to create multiple looks depending on the texture and pigment saturation. If you use a medium saturation, you could look kitsch, and depending on the texture you can adjust the look to create a lovely look. When analyzing the pink colors used in the backstage makeup, you can group them into two different styles: One is bare pink applied very lightly to reveal the natural skin tone. The other is neutral pink that is mixed appropriately with brown colors.

Cool pink eyeshadows and blushers are used differently, adding pearl pigments to create a satin texture similar to the makeup looks above. They are in contrast with the earthy coral tone-on-tone makeup seen in the S/S season. The low contrast pink color used broadly on the eyelids highlights the structure of the eyes depending on the model’s facial features. This slightly reveals the skin color and may even make the skin shine depending on the texture. Eyelines are not used, so as to stress the natural look, and eyebrows tend to be drawn in a way that expresses the natural shape of the model’s eyebrows.

Lip makeup was either aligned with the eyeshadow or a nudy pink was used. Instead of using a bold and glossy texture, liquid lipsticks were used to prevent the lips lines from standing out too much and rather to blend in well with the natural lip color.

2

Taupe Pink

Tod’s, Milan

Hermès, Paris

Max Mara, Milan

The pink color makeup used by high-profile fashion houses from Paris and Milan was matched with formal outfit styles where they layered the positive and romantic look of the pink color on top of brown shades to make sure that they didn’t lose that chic look. If you look closely into the makeup looks above, they didn’t simply use a single tone, but instead applied two to three colors and layered and blended them together.

The taupe (gray and brown) shades, which are used widely in the backstage, appeared as a new color that makes them look somewhat different this season. Unlike rose brown or erotic brown, which we saw in the F/W season a year ago, the shadow has become shallower, and a new taupe-pink eye makeup was introduced that gives off a fresh look mixed with a touch of pink.

With basic contouring and eyebrow makeup, they did not miss out on formal details, while omitting the eyeline to create a soft makeup look. The lips were expressed with light touches instead of bold colors to reveal the natural lip color and the lip lines, contributing to the natural trend.

3

Mustard Yellow

Issey Miyake, Paris

Jason Wu, NY

Ndigo, NY

As mentioned in the introduction above, collections in this season are breaking away from conventional F/W colors. If you want to get away from the trench coat makeup of the fall season, pay attention to this color. As seen in the Jason Wu collection, a mix and match of black and yellow hues always creates that high-end look regardless of the saturation and brightness of colors. The gradation in the perfect black eyeshadow makes them look as gray, blending well with the mustard color, creating the elegant look. The contrast between the black colors around the eyes and the yellow color on the corner of the eyes makes the eyes look bigger.

The collections boasted multiple eye makeup styles and skills, including eye shadow covering the entire eyelids, small dots of accent colors, and thin and long eyelines. As such, the beauty industry is expected to widen the color spectrum according to the various eye makeup needs.

Matching mustard color clothes and makeup styles continue as an extension of the Y2K trend. If you apply the yellow color just in the corner instead of the entire eyelid, you can create a fresh look without looking swollen.

On the other hand, the bare lips trend is expected to continue with light, lively makeup using light peach or coral peach colors.

4

Hot Pink

Valentino, Paris

Bronx and Banco, NY

Collina Strada, NY

As flowers have their own meanings, the pink color symbolizes freedom, unique personality, and curiosity. Inspired by the symbolism, numerous pink makeup looks were presented that give bright, cheerful look to help people break away from the pandemic blue.

Extreme fuchsia pink from the Valentino collection made the eyes look more vibrant as if the designer had applied aqua paint. Instead of making the models look as if they were wearing full makeup, the skin and lips gave off a natural radiance to make sure the eyes drew the attention. The pink color may look monotonous, but if you use white pearl on the corners of the eye, it creates a 3-dimensional look that aligns with the roundness of the eyes. As the pandemic continues and people are still wearing masks, skin makeup that makes the skin look moist and shiny is used for a healthy complexion. As for the lips, glitter is applied on top of the lips to create volume. They try to change the overall tone and mood instead of using multiple colors. If you’d like to break away from your old routine and try a trendy makeup look, we suggest that you try using the hot pink color to make your eyes look much bigger than before.

5

Etc. - Cobalt blue, Very Peri

Gucci, Milan

Private Policy, NY

Gabriela Hearst, NY

Blue was seen in many parts of the collections as one of the trendy colors, which must be related to the pantone color of the year, Very Peri. Different textures were used, including parts, dry shadow, and glitter, while many viewers gave attention to eye makeup that emphasized the entire eyes by placing cobalt blue parts, like Veri Peri, which appear to have mixed white on purple.

The two-tone makeup look was also showcased by mixing two colors, yellow eye shadow and lavendar, to create a feminine and bight look. In the Private Policy collection, models applied a pastel Very Peri color on the eyelids to appear as if they had turned on a neo sign around their eyes. Some models used Very Peri glitter on the front side of the eyes to make their eyes look bigger and the face look brigher. On the other hand, light, shiny makeup was used on the skin to reveal blemishes, contributing the makeup trend after the pandemic.

Lavender, violet, Very Peri and other colors were used to give off a feeling of hope, such as the ingeniousness and creativity that breaks away from existing conventions. Likewise, the F/W collections are expected to be filled with hues that offer energy in this pandemic era.
