2023 Resort Women Off Season’s Fashion & Beauty Trends

When it comes to fashion shows, many think of S/S and F/W runways. Only a few fashion-forward people know about the Resort Collection, a seasonless collection that is dropped in between official seasons. The collection is also called the ‘Off-season’ or the ‘Cruise’ collection, and in the past, it featured light fabrics, swimwear, and hats worn by the wealthy on their luxurious vacations. As traveling became easier thanks to globalization, the collection is now presented as the Free season lineup. For this reason, most brands’ resort collections are set in vacation destinations, such as beaches, resorts, and forests. The venue for the resort collection is not limited to the boundaries of the world’s four fashion cities. Rather, fashion houses can take their resort collection wherever they want. Let’s go on a journey around the venues of the 2023 resort collection and its makeup trends.

As mentioned above, the resort collection is not held in typical backstage-runway settings like the usual seasonal collections. In many instances, nature-friendly stages reminiscent of the holiday season or travel destinations are used as backdrops for resort collections. Unlike in the past, the boundary between holiday outfits and everyday apparel has been blurred due to the change in living standards and patterns. For this reason, the overall trend among resort collections nowadays is the addition of a sporty twist to outfits that are both wearable and suitable for everyday occasions, while still maintaining that ‘resort’ feel.

It’s impossible to talk about resort collections without first mentioning Chanel. This year’s Chanel collection took place on the beach in Monte-Carlo, as chosen by Chanel’s creative director, Virginie Viard, in memory of the late Karl Lagerfeld. Chanel’s characteristic elements like the number 5, windowpane plaid, and tweed were incorporated into the outfits, with motorcycle helmets and jumpsuits, as well as lighter silhouettes emphasizing the sportyness of the overall collection. Racing suits, which are usually associated with heaviness or toughness, underwent a feminine transformation, thanks to the mix of different fabrics and color combinations. Women’s Fashion & Beauty Trend - 2023 Resort

1 Pink mood lustrous skin

Fendi, NY

Max Mara, Lisbon

Brandon Maxwell, NY

As seen in the collections of Fendi, Max Mara, and Brandon Maxwell, pink-themed makeup added a soft, elegant look to the face as well as the overall body. In the case of eye makeup, many collections used black eyeliner to fill in the upper mucous membrane of the eye, and mascara to complete a basic yet luxurious makeup look. Fendi matched lips and cheeks in quartz pink, while Max Mara stressed glossy lips using pale violet red. In the case of Brandon Maxwell, glossy lips in cherry red heightened the collection’s dynamic and lovely mood.

When I used to work with Hollywood models in the States, I was particularly concerned about making their skin look moisturized as non-Asian models tend to have a lot of peach fuzz on their face. Since their skin absorbs the moisture of skin care products much faster than that of Asians, I had to spend a tremendous amount of time on skin care to give them that dewy look. In the end, I came up with a way to make up for this by mixing serum or other cream-type products with a blush or highlighter in order to give the face a soft, glowy, and healthy tone. In this way, I was able to mimic the texture I wanted while sticking with the overall color theme.

2 Cheek line with coral

Chanel, Monaco

Gucci, Castel del Monte

Jenny Packham, London

As it is a resort collection, a coral color that can emphasize the feeling of natural redness caused by the hot sun was also used. All three brands used the fusion coral color to cover the cheeks from the front to the sides. Thanks to this, a three-dimensional and luxurious makeup look was completed.

Chanel presented its iconic details emphasized by the sequin graphic plaid pattern. The color of the cap and the color used for the cheek/lip were both living coral. Gucci’s resort collection expressed the light and subtlety of the cosmos, as envisioned by the collection’s theme, Cosmogony. Baby pink and tangerine colors were used in the skin, eye, and lip makeup to express the softness of orange light. Jenny Packham’s collection featured multi-concentration, layered taupe pink eye and lip makeup, highlighting the orange-brown color theme with varying shades and saturation.

3 Classic dark smokey eyes

Christian Dior, Seville

Dior’s makeup artist Peter Phillips expressed the depth of Spanish nights with dark smokey eye makeup. The intensity of the black smokey makeup was maximized through the contrast between the clear skin and the thick shadow on the eyelids. The midnight black shimmer color is blended with the black with a ⅔ gradation on the eyelid, completing a modern yet understated black eye makeup look. The skin was made to look light and glowy. Because the wide-brimmed hat makes the lips stand out, a dewy lip balm was used for a moisturized, glowy look, which matched the old-fashioned elegance of the outfits.

I had the chance to watch the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II of England as I was writing this column. I was overwhelmed by the calm atmosphere, the formality, and the tradition of the state funeral that was carried out in the royal palace. As such, I was reminded of how Dior organically integrated fashion and makeup with Spanish tradition and formality. I could not help but think about the importance of tradition in shaping the existence of a brand.

Christian Dior, Seville

From manly turn-up pants and suspenders to fringed shawls, Dior’s resort look was completed with a neutral touch of Spanish tradition. This year’s Dior resort collection featured clothes with embroidery elements, which are said to be the result of the brand’s collaboration with local artisans. Bolero jackets and vests in a Spanish folk style heightened its classic vibe. Dior’s creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri emphasized that fashion is the epitome of community effort, and that the energy of all the artisans is fully ingrained in the clothes.

4 Unrestricted colorful shimmer pearl

Undercover, Paris

Poster girl, Miami

Gucci, Castel del Monte

Next, let’s have a look at collections that adopted shimmering pearls of all color and shape.

The Undercover collection used blended matte red eyeshadow, which was applied all the way to the eyebrows. Under the eyes, toned-up rouge powder was used to create a gradually fading gradation effect.
Red glitter pearls were scattered horizontally around the eyes for that extra touch.

The Poster Girl collection applied a neon-lime-colored metallic shimmer eyeshadow on the upper eyelids, highlighted with white eyeliner. This sporty and kitsch makeup complemented the liberal, casual vibe of the resort collection.

In Gucci’s resort collection, metallic shimmer eyeshadow was applied thinly all over the eyelids, whose edges were blurred to create a Milky Way-like face, reminiscent of the theme of Cosmogony. The cosmic glitter of the eyeshadow could also be seen in the lip makeup, where gloss was used to express the reflecting light.

Gucci, Castel del Monte

As we saw in the 2022 F/W Women and Men’s collections, brands continued to use the same colors in makeup as those used in their apparel/accessories. In the case of Undercover, the color of the eyeshadow and the color of the outfit matched, whereas with Poster Girl, the white eyeliner matched the white thread used in the apparel. The eyeshadow colors used on Gucci’s runway were the same as the lining of the bags held by models.

The hair was tied up in a ponytail or braided to make the shimmering pearls in the makeup and outfit stand out.

5 Two colored bold eye line

Anthony Rubio, LA

Anthony Rubio often includes pet apparel as part of the fashion house’s runway, and this resort collection was no exception. Inspired by Women's History Month, which is the month of March, this collection embodies a love for pets and humankind. Bright, cheerful colors used in the background and outfits of the collection highlighted the overall theme, namely the coexistence of diversity and inclusiveness of our time.

Shiny beads embroidered on the entire collection, which, together with colorful apparel and wavy hair exemplified a holiday with your pet. The bold two-color eyeliner makeup contributed to this look, where the azure blue eyeliner with a hint of green hue enlivened the otherwise uncomplicated makeup to create a harmony between the makeup and the apparel. There are two main ways to draw colored eyeliner: use a colored eyeliner, or mix a transparent, viscous whitening multi-balm with the eyeshadow color of your choice.

This collection is a reminder to keep an eye out for the companion-animal fashion industry, as many now consider companion animals as their family, deserving of love, good food, quality apparel, and even cosmetics.
