The first-ever show in Korea by Andreas Gursky, the master of modern photography

The Amorepacific Museum of Art (APMA) is holding the first solo exhibition in Korea by Andreas Gursky, the master of contemporary photography, titled Andreas Gursky. The show will be on view at APMA located in Yongsan, Seoul, South Korea from March 31 through August 14, 2022. (*Exhibition website:
http://apma.amorepacific.com)
Andreas Gursky is the marster of modern photography known for his large format photographs that convey deep insights into humanity and civilization. He shoots places like high-rise buildings, factories, apartments, and stock exchanges that represent modern civilization, inviting viewers to contemplate the existence of individual people amidst this huge society. The show will present Gursky’s noble aspirations for capturing a cross-sectional view of modern civilization by

Born in Leipzig, Germany, Gursky studied typological photography under Bernd and Hilla Becher who established the aesthetics and tradition of modern German photography at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. Unlike his early works that depicted serene surroundings, he began creating new works starting in the 1990’s by mixing and editing images shot from afar. Ever since, he has continued to cross between boundaries and has explored the characteristics of abstract paintings and minimalistic sculptures to gradually break down the conventions of standardized photography.

APMA plans to display 47 works by Gursky that have been taken over a period of 40 years, including famous pieces like Paris, Montparnasse (1993) and 99 Cent (1999, remastered in 2009). The exhibition will take place across seven rooms under different themes like Manipulated Images, Reference to Art History, and Sublime Aspirations. The show is expected to draw the attention of his fans around the world as Gursky’s latest works, A man walking on ice (2021) and Strief (2022), will also be unveiled for the first time in the world.

Vol. 12 of the Asian Beauty Series, The World
Made by Landscape Paintings is published

The Amorepacific Foundation, an academic research foundation, was established in 1973 by the founder and chairman of Amorepacific, Suh Sung-whan. Since 2011, the foundation has found the studies redefining beauty by taking a multilateral approach on Asian history and culture and studies that compare different perceptions in various regions by supporting research on Asian beauty. They not only publish research books, but also offer book classes to share new interpretations of beauty to the public using a variety of content.

This March, the Amorepacific Foundation announced that they had published The World Made by Landscape Paintings, the 12th volume of the Asian beauty series. The book explores landscape paintings that depict nature and that seem to be the purest form of art among East Asian paintings that can in fact be an art genre developed for selfish interests. The book argues that mountains, waters, and trees are, of course, nature, but the paintings themselves were drawn with particular intentions. According to the existing studies, landscape paintings imitate the real scenery, or satisfy the aesthetic needs of people with discerning eyes. However, such a value-neutral understanding of landscape paintings isolates them from the society, culture, politics, and history alike. Such a perception overlooks that fact on how landscape paintings have interestingly shaped our perspectives and senses of the world we know. In that regard, the book is a cultural and historical investigation into East Asian society formed by landscape paintings that have enjoyed a special status.

The series was written by Dr. Cho Kyu-hee, a visiting researcher of the Harvard-Yenching Institute, and a research professor at Korea University. Dr. Cho Kyu-hee studies the impact of ‘successful’ artworks that have had a profound effect on Korean culture and society, together with their implications on politics, society, and culture.
