Sustainability will continue to play an important part in purchase decisions during the recession, especially for Gen Z. According to GreenPrint, 66% of surveyed Americans said they would spend more on sustainable products in the midst of a high inflation period.

As well as providing a more sustainable alternative to traditional water-based formats and requiring less packaging, solid formats last longer and have a greater shelf life, which will appeal to price-conscious consumers. Linear Beauty's (US) Cocoa Lotion Bar is a family friendly moisturising bar for the hands, body, lips and tattoos. Made with just five ingredients, it comes in a tin that extends its life and that can be refilled or metal recycled. Solid skincare brand SBTRCT (UK) has an absorbent, antibacterial and mould-resistant dish made from diatomite that can be bought to store its multi-purpose cleansing bars to extend their life.

How to action this: highlight the long-life aspect of solid formats as well as multi-purpose qualities and their simplicity, evidencing efficacy and listing ingredients. Fenty Skin's (US) Cocoa Cleans'r Soothing All-Over Cleansing Bar is supported by multi-tasking ingredients and applications (coconut and baobab oils to soften skin, shea and cocoa butter to nourish and condition). It comes with a stand designed to help preserve and extend the life of the bar to maximise cost per usage.

Amplify the zero-waste narrative of solid formats as they will remain a key element in the decision to purchase. Plein de Vie (South Korea) creates soaps with a camellia butter base that can be used as a shampoo, treatment, foam cleanser and body wash. The packaging is eco-friendly sugarcane paper and to reduce its carbon footprint, the brand's made-to-order system ships products out just once a week.




Stick with it: all-in-one heroes



Stick formats are valued for being mess-free and easily portable. For cost-conscious consumers, innovations such as anhydrous, balm-type formats that deliver benefits across multiple categories have huge appeal, reducing the need for multiple purchases as well as travel sizes.

Twist-up stick formats, known as multi sticks or multi-balms, that can be applied to the lips, cheeks, skin or hands have become staple products in the 2-minute makeup bag, favoured for their convenience. In South Korea, stick formats have been dubbed 'un-tact beauty' as their application avoids direct contact with hands, which accelerated their appeal during the Covid-19 crisis. The cost of living crisis will further the allure of stick formats as they become a smart way to reduce the number of products purchased.

K-beauty brand Kahi has seen searches for its Wrinkle Bounce Multi Balm go from 100,000 in 2021, to 12 million in one year. It offers four multi-purpose skincare stick-balms and has expanded its multitasking formats to make-up. The all-over highlighter and KissTin Balm is a tinted format that can be used as a coloured lipbalm, blusher and eyeshadow, offering value for money. The product features ingredients such as its patented salmon complex, shisandra berry, gromwell root, gardenia and turmeric extract.

How to action this: think cross-category. The possibilities for stick formats are broad, from an all-over moisturiser that also functions as a brow gel to a haircare tool for slicking away flyaways and taming beards, so highlight all the ways your product can be used as an efficient, all-in-one alternative that helps save on multiple, individual purchases. MiMC One's (Japan) Styling Herb Balm comes in black, dark brown and clear, and is designed to cover grey hair and touch-up flyaways while delivering scalp- and hair-nourishing benefits.

Leverage the desire for sustainability and cost saving with refillable stick formats, such a LA-based brand Bite's refillable deodorant sticks. Explore zero-waste packaging. Papr’s (US) The Everything Stick is a multi-purpose moisturiser packaged in 100% PCR paper that can be home-composted.




FUNctional formats: cosmetic multi-taskers



In colour cosmetics, consumers will invest in smart designs that offer creative multitasking solutions. Keeping the benefits high and costs affordable will be key, as these products prove frugal can be fun.

Value-focused consumers want both quantity and quality. Tapping into the trend for FUNctionals, products that deliver multiple applications or tools without compromising efficacy will appeal, saving money and sparking small moments of joy. Luxcrime's (Indonesia) 4-in-1 brush set is a smart design. Comprising a foundation brush, eyeshadow and blending and creasing blush in a single, compact format, it makes on-the-go touch-ups easy. Similarly, Ilia's Multi-Stick Face Palette features the US brand's best-selling shades in a buildable, solid texture that can be applied and blended onto the cheeks, eyes or lips using just fingers; no separate brush is needed.

How to action this: as supply chain disruptions continue to contribute to rising unit prices and material shortages, combining multiple hero products in one smart format is a sensible solution for brands, enabling them to meet consumer demand and keep costs low. This is also an opportunity to revisit packaging designs and formats to reduce manufacturing and shipping costs.

Create simple, compact, lightweight designs that have added functionality. Alleyoop (US) is a master of multi-functional formats. The Pen Pal is a 4-in-1 touch-up pen that is an eyeliner, lip liner, brow pencil and highlighter in an easy-to-use click pen format. Customers can choose between three flattering palettes, with each pen featuring four coloured liners, such as black eyeliner, taupe brow liner, nude pink lip liner and champagne highlighter.




'Skinified' hybrids: value adding ingredients



Skincare will remain a priority for recessionary consumers and products that deliver skincare benefits alongside another core function will appeal. 'Skinification' will gain renewed momentum, increasingly becoming a deciding 'added value' factor that tips a purchase toward one product over another.

Accelerated by a global focus on health and wellbeing, products that support skin health will be a priority. Skincare is seen as a long-term investment and any product that has this aspect will be viewed as 'extra value'. Skinification of adjacent categories including haircare, make-up, nails and hand care and colour cosmetics will continue as it finds a new audience in cost-conscious and frugal-minded consumers. UK hand sanitiser brand Never Go Alone's fragrant Sanitising Mist includes moisturising ingredients such as ceramide, ginseng, aloe vera and green tea extract alongside its protective anti-bacterial formula. It has a mood-improving scent to reduce anxiety, a function that will appeal to worried consumers.

Suncare poverty is a growing concern and products that eliminate having to choose between skincare and sun protection will be in demand. US skincare brand Relevant's One & Done Everyday Cream with SPF 40 is a four-in-one moisturiser and sunscreen formulated with squalane, sodium hyaluronate, antioxidants, calming oat extract and Active Stress Defense technology to protect against 97% of UV radiation. It’s also designed for all skin tones, from light to dark, and leaves no white cast.

How to action this: invest in cross-category skincare-infused products that mean people don't have to choose between benefits. A-beauty brand Gloei's Sunlighter doubles as a bronzer and highlighter, while Skylighter is a series of creamy blush balms for the cheeks, lips and eyelids. Both lines are vegan and contain South African botanical extracts such as baobab oil and aloe vera that help protect the skin.

Cost-conscious consumers will invest in premium multi-taskers at higher price points. Look to cult products such as Iris & Romeo's (US) Best Skin Days SPF 25, a 5-in-1 formula that is a sunscreen, blue light/pollution protector, serum, moisturiser and skin tint all in one pot, or UK-based Hershesons' Almost Everything Cream.




Second life strategies: extended value



Products that can be upcycled or repurposed will give value-conscious consumers another reason to buy. An alternative take on 'multi-tasking' beyond product, keepsake packaging adds value that is functional, beautiful or both.

The recyclable and refillable beauty segment has brought upcycling concepts to the fore, with brands developing formats with reusable or repurposable features. Valued at $2.4bn USD, the global circular beauty market is predicted to grow at a CAGR of 5.8% between 2022 and 2032.

A sustainable trend that is also practical, multi-purpose beauty products with keepsake packaging and bottles that can be repurposed will optimise their lifetime and value. Latvia-based brand Oquist Cosmetics' multi-functional products, such as Its 6-in-1 Anti-Ageing Serum, are housed in a "piece of art". The terracotta sculptures are by local artists and designed to be displayed. Once empty, the brand encourages customers to use their imagination, stating they can be used as an "olive oil dispenser, vase, book holder, tea bowl, espresso cup or jewellery container". In a similar vein, K-beauty brand Yeonji 's refillable creams are housed in handcrafted ceramic containers that can be repurposed to hold small objects such as jewellery or trinkets.

How to action this: think outside the box. Swedish fragrance brand Oriflame Cosmetics created a scent bottle that can be reused as a photo frame. The faceted glass bottle is encased within a wooden frame and is designed to be removed and reused as a frame for photos of loved ones. The wooden frame was responsibly sourced and is without glue or magnets. Similarly, Chinese brand Fushengliuji's scented candles are made to look like gaiwan, traditional tea cups that date back to the Tang dynasty. Made from tea-grade porcelain, they can be reused as tea cups once the candles, inspired by traditional Chinese notes and ingredients, have burnt down.

Use creative engagement strategies. South Korea's Beyond Cosmetics prints floral arrangements onto its packaging, which can then be cut out and used as diffuser reed paper.




Action points



1. Communicate the value added

Shift messaging to focus on the added value multi-tasking formats deliver and clearly communicate how one product can save money by replacing many. Celebrate the consumers' smart choice and emphasise this is trading up, not trading down


2. Cater to changing priorities and pressures

Understand your community’s needs and anxieties amid the cost-of-living crisis. Which products are necessities or small luxuries? Hygiene poverty is increasing, so creating multi-tasking personal care items that can be used by all the family will help alleviate this


3. Rethink and reformat

The cost of living crisis and supply chain issues are an opportunity to do things differently. Revisit your packaging designs and formats to reduce materials, weight and costs. Combine hero products into one smart format or deploy signature ingredients, including fragrances, in an adjacent category


4. Add value through sustainability

Sustainability will continue to play an important role in purchase decisions during the recession. As well as creating multi-taskers in solid or refillable formats, explore second-life design and keepsake packaging
